New Classes and Workshops for May at DCA

Registration is open for the new May classes and workshops offered by Dorchester Center for the Arts. Selections include:
Online: Intro to Pastels with Kelly Tanner. In this four-week class, students will learn the basics of both chalk and oil pastels, including composition, value, color, and technique. Students will be drawing still lifes from direct observation, as well as drawing landscapes from photographs. Four weeks May 4 – 25: Tuesdays (5:00 – 6:30 p.m.)

Online: DIY Block Printing with Emily Martin. In this two-hour workshop, makers of all ages learn how to create dynamic printed fabric using collected materials. It is encouraged to use recycled or found items for printing as well as fabric to be printed on. May 22: Saturday (11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.) Children under the age of 12 free with adult registration.

In person classes include Up-cycle Bottle Craft with World Wide Hope, a trash-into-treasure workshop for ages 6-17, with World Wide Hope founder Griselda Jiménez. Saturday May 1, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Intro to the Pottery Wheel with Robert Gladney begins on Thursday May 6 and runs six weeks on Thursdays from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Open to ages 16 and up. Paint Pour Fundamentals, another class open to ages 16 and up, is a one-day workshop to explore acrylic pour painting, Saturday May 8 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Barbara Zuehlke will begin a new Intermediate Watercolors six-week session on Wednesday May 19, 1:00-3:30 p.m. Students will practice learning different triad palette combinations and pulling and glazing watercolors using personal photographs and still life as inspiration. Newcomers can try Beginning Watercolors with Diana Evans, a four-week session beginning Thursday May 20, 1:30-4:00 p.m. Students will experiment with several techniques and produce a finished painting.
