Ceramic Raku Workshop

September 26, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm

$25.00 – $110.00

DCA partners with Wednesday Morning Artists to present  this ceramic workshop with visiting artist Brett Thomas.

Raku firing techniques originated in Japan, during the sixteenth century. Traditional Raku firing stems from Buddhist influences, particularly those connected to the Japanese tea ceremony. Ceramic Raku bowls were often used in these tea ceremonies, and those who practiced the tradition preferred the simplicity and natural beauty of the ceramic items.

Prior to the Raku firing there will pottery workshops to attend where students will create their own works of art. Work will then be bisque fired in preparation for the final Raku firing. Students must take one workshop, either wheel or handbuilding.

Fee is $75 for DCA members, $110 for non-DCA members, & $25 for college students 18-21 with proper ID.

Class dates:

Tuesday, Sept. 19 and 26, 5:30 to 8 p.m. at DCA for wheel throwing or handbuilding.

Saturday, Sept. 30, 12 noon to 3 p.m. at DCA for wheel throwing or handbuilding.

Wedesday, Sept. 20 and 27, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Peachblossom, handbuilding only.

(900 Peachblossom Avenue Cambridge MD 21613)

Final Raku firing will take place at Peachblossom later in the fall – date TBD.

Each student must attend at least one of the sessions in order to have a piece of pottery to fire. Students may make up to three pieces if time permits.

After registering online, students MUST call DCA with their choice of workshop: 410-228-7782, or email [email protected]. Space is limited. Early registration advised.
