The Fiber of Life

The Fiber of Life is a solo exhibition featuring the original artwork of Francisco “Paco” Loza, alongside a group exhibition of fiber artists based in the greater DMV area.  The selected artists for the group exhibit are inspired by Loza’s approach to storytelling via the medium of yarn or fiber art.

Originally from Mexico, Paco Loza is now a beloved Baltimore-based artist and educator. A self-taught artist with over two decades of experience, Loza has exhibited his artwork and led interactive workshops in Mexico, the United States, and Canada, at museums, cultural centers, universities, Rehoboth Art League, and the Embassy of Mexico in Washington, DC.

He honors his Mexican heritage through the technique of Arte de Estambre, or Pressed Yarn Art, in which he shapes, cuts, and presses yarn, thread-by thread, into vibrant and intricate expressions of nature, Mexican traditions, spirituality, abstract, and some of his work is also uniquely 3-D in perspective.  Loza’s artwork is a form of telling stories of the physical, spiritual, and contemporary worlds.

This exhibition intertwines Loza’s extraordinary artwork with fiber artists from different backgrounds featured in the group exhibition.  Their fiber artwork reflects stories that explore themes from race and gender, family and cultural heritage, as well as their identity as an artist. In this collective exhibit at DCA, Paco Loza and other artists showcase their respective techniques of storytelling through fiber art.
