Latin América Art Expo: Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. This year, the Dorchester Center for the Arts displays an eye opening, multi artist exhibition entitled “Latin América Art Expo” from September 6 through October 26, featuring traditional, contemporary, and folk art from Fredy Granillo, Jorge Perez, Jose Ramirez, and Guest Curator, Griselda Jimenez. Each artist celebrates local and Indigenous art, honoring their Hispanic heritage.

The exhibit captures the incredible craftmanship and color technique of both Pottery art and Alebrijes, which are whimsical Mexican folk art sculptures that depict animals and mystical creatures painted with intense colors and patterns. The exhibit also features several youth artists from a community- based organization Worldwide Hope, that was founded by Griselda Jimenez. They recreated their version of the Pinata. Although very popular in the United States, originally the Pinata was a representation of the religious symbolism and cultural significance of Mexico’s artistic expression.

Second Saturday Artist Receptions will be held on September 14 and October 12, with live music, food, and artist talks. Free, all are welcome!
