Teen Summer Afternoon Art Intensive

An event every week that begins at 1:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, repeating until August 18, 2023
Four week Teen Summer Afternoon Art Intensive for students entering 9-12th grades, instructed by Kathleen Hurley. Program is FREE – students can attend one or all weeks!
Students will start each week focusing on MD Standard 1 & 2 experimenting with thematic materials and looking at historical and contemporary examples for their artwork. Mid Week Students will focus begin to add Standard 3 into their work looking at the finishing of a piece and how to critique their work. For the end of the week, students will focus on Standards 4 – 8 finalizing pieces, deciding on exhibition worthiness, creating artist statements, and practicing curatorial skills. All other standards will be touched on briefly through the introduction of projects and art history.
Week 1 / July 24-28 / Thematic Statement: Explore the traditional mediums of painting and drawing. Participants will explore both historical and contemporary practices and techniques to create work that they are proud of.
Week 2 /July 31-August 4 / Thematic Statement: What is the difference between fine art and craft? Participants will explore different mediums like sewing, felting, dyeing, and weaving in this week’s session.
Week 3 / August 7-11 / Thematic Statement: Ever wonder what it takes to create 3D forms? In this session, participants will explore various tools, materials, and techniques to create 3D artwork. From cardboard to clay, to found objects see what you can create!
Week 4 / August 14-18 / Thematic Statement: What is performance art? How do artists use digital tools to create images? What goes into creating a mixed-media piece? These questions and more will be explored in this session.
Goals of the program:
Week 1: Experimentation with at least 3 different techniques/materials. At least 2 finished artworks.
Week 2: A better understanding of the difference between fine art and craft and the value in both. Experimenting with a plethora of fiber mediums. At least 1 finished artwork.
Week 3: Experimentation with at least 3 different techniques/materials. At least 2 finished artworks.
Week 4: An understanding of alternative art practices and how one can apply them to their art practice. An exploration of alternative practices.
Overall Goals:
● Students will create a thematic body of work
● Students will work to create an artist statement about their body of work
● Students will curate an exhibition with their body of work
● Students will participate in a gallery reception for their exhibit.
